Significant changes to your appearance are a natural part of the aging process. However, you don’t have to accept those changes. At Aire MedSpa in Sarasota, FL, we offer injectable dermal fillers to help our clients feel more confident in their appearance. Today, we’re talking about one of our most popular dermal filler formulas, Juvederm Voluma, including how long the results last.
How Long Does Voluma Last?
One of the most common cosmetic concerns people have as they age is thinning cheeks. Loose, sagging skin and wrinkles are other common concerns. However, despite how common these changes are, they are not necessarily welcome. Voluma can reverse aesthetic problems in the midface for approximately 24 months.
Why Does Facial Volume Loss Occur?
There are several potential causes of facial volume loss. Sometimes, people experience hollow cheeks following extreme weight loss. However, facial volume loss is most commonly caused by a significant slowdown in collagen production. By the time you reach the age of 25, your skin starts to produce collagen, an essential supportive protein, at a reduced rate.
This production rate continues decreasing year-over-year until the inadequate collagen levels are extremely noticeable. Sagging cheek skin is another common side effect of the natural aging process due to a severe slowdown in the production of elastin, an essential supportive fiber responsible for skin elasticity.
What Is This Injectable Dermal Filler?
Voluma is an FDA-approved injectable dermal filler that is administered with a tiny needle. Its primary ingredient is hyaluronic acid, sometimes referred to as HA. Hyaluronic acid is a special polysaccharide (chain of sugar molecules) that is produced throughout your body.
However, it plays one of its most important roles in your skin. HA attracts water and can bind to up to 100 times its weight in water molecules 10 times over. The presence of extra hyaluronic acid and water encourages your skin to produce extra collagen and elastin.
Other Popular Juvederm Formulas
Voluma is an incredibly effective treatment if your goal is to volumize your cheeks and improve the appearance of your cheek skin. However, if you have other cosmetic concerns, you will need other Juvederm injections, as well. Here are some other popular Juvederm formulas.
Vollure is another incredibly popular Juvederm formula. While a loss of elasticity and volume commonly occurs in the cheeks, any region of the face can show the signs of aging. If you have concerns about the appearance of your mouth and nose, there is an excellent chance that Juvederm Vollure is right for you.
Vollure is extremely effective for the treatment of volume loss-related nasolabial folds that run between your nose and mouth. It is also great for the treatment of smile lines.
Do you wear lipstick because you feel self-conscious about the appearance of your lips? Do you feel like your lips are too thin? Do you have concerns about asymmetry? If so, Juvederm Volbella may be right for you. Volbella is a great way to volumize your lips, but that’s not all it is good for. It can also be used to erase lines and wrinkles that form around your mouth, like smoker’s lines.
What To Expect Throughout the Treatment Process
If you have concerns about the appearance of your cheeks, you’re probably wondering whether this treatment is right for you. You’re also probably wondering what you can expect during the treatment process. Read on to discover everything you can expect from the treatment process from start to finish.
Attending Your Initial Consultation
The first step in the treatment process is attending an initial consultation to ensure that Voluma is right for you. The first step in verifying that you are a good candidate for this treatment is reviewing your medical history. As a general rule of thumb, if you are at least 22 years of age and want to volumize your midface or lift and tighten loose, sagging cheek skin, you will qualify for this treatment.
However, this treatment is not appropriate for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding or individuals who suffer from certain medical conditions. For instance, this treatment may not be right for you if you suffer from certain bleeding disorders or heart conditions.
Preparing for Your Injection Session
Once we determine that this treatment is appropriate for you, you must prepare for your treatment session. One of the most important things you must do in advance of your treatment is to wear sunscreen diligently. If your skin is irritated at the time of your appointment, we will have to reschedule your injection session. It is also very important that you stop taking blood-thinning pharmaceuticals in the days leading up to your treatment session.
For instance, you should stop taking fish oil supplements, NSAIDs, and MAOIs. You should also avoid taking supplements that include vitamins E and K for several days in advance of your treatment. Also, it is essential that you do not consume alcohol or tobacco products for a day or two prior to your injection session. During your initial consultation, we will provide you with a comprehensive list of guidelines.
How to Prepare On the Day of Your Appointment
On the day of your injection session, you don’t have to do too much in way of preparation. It is highly advisable that you eat a nutritious snack or small, healthy meal and drink at least two cups of hydrating fluids. It is also advisable to come in with a clean face that is free from cosmetics and jewelry.
Attending Your Injection Session
Depending on the scope of your treatment, you can expect your injections to be complete within 15 to 60 minutes. One reason this treatment is so convenient is the formula contains a small amount of lidocaine, an injectable numbing agent. Therefore, there is no need to have a topical numbing cream applied to your skin prior to treatment. During your initial consultation, we will advise you on how long you should expect your treatment to take.
If you are only concerned about the appearance of your midface, your treatment will probably only take a quarter of an hour. On the other hand, your treatment session will take closer to an hour if you are treating your midface and a couple of other regions of your face. Typically, each area of concern takes around 15 to 20 minutes to treat. Therefore, your session may take around 30 minutes if you are treating your cheeks and lip and mouth region.
Caring for Your Skin
Unlike invasive cheek augmentation, you won’t have to deal with a recovery period that lasts for six to eight weeks. Instead, you will be free to return to work as soon as we finish administering your injections and reviewing your post-treatment care guidelines. There is no downtime required, and your recovery will only consist of following a few simple post-treatment care guidelines.
For instance, you need to avoid direct sun exposure for a few days. You also need to avoid any activities that can result in excessive sweating. Other important instructions you must adhere to include sleeping on your back on the night of your treatment session, refraining from alcohol consumption, and refraining from tobacco consumption.
Enjoying Your Results
You can expect to see an initial improvement in your appearance as soon as your treatment is complete. This is due to the HA-based gel that is administered into the foundational layer of your skin. However, it can take anywhere from 10 to 14 days to see the final results of this treatment. This is because it takes time for your skin to produce extra collagen in response to the extra HA and water in the treatment area.
How You Can Enjoy Longer-Lasting Results
To enjoy results that last as long as possible, your priority after your treatment needs to be maintaining the health of your collagen. Here are some actionable steps you can take to keep your skin healthy and young:
- Don’t smoke
- Minimize alcohol consumption
- Eat nutritious meals
